From my sister, a warning I hope we will heed.
Someone wrote on a blog I read last night that they wouldn't vote for Obama again, saying,"fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."
But if we will be honest, we must admit that the shame IS on us. We were not fooled--we knew exactly who Obama was when we elected him. We chose him deliberately, and in doing so, we said to God, "We don't need you. We can do this our way, and it will be fine--better than fine because we are not going to answer to you. We're going to follow our own ideas of how things should be." It was a brash and exciting experiment for us--to see if we could do without God.
As a collective, this nation deliberately chose a man to govern us who we knew did not love God and who did not accept his values--the very values that we make our laws by--and who we knew did not consider himself either aligned with God or submitted to God, and so we got a man who acts against our good with impunity. He does not ask God what is right for himself or for us; in his pride he thinks he knows what is best but he is guided by his own narcissism rather than by any right moral standard or by any sense of love, self-sacrifice, or duty. We were warned by many about him, and he told us himself what he intended to do to us, but we wanted to believe the happy lies the media gave us and that we gave each other--more than we wanted to hear the truth, so that's what we chose.
When Pontius Pilate offered the people the choice of Jesus or the murderer Barrabas, they chose Barrabas. The people preferred to embrace a wicked and murderous man rather than accept the one before whom they have to lay down their own pride and self interest. They chose Barrabas because they wanted to continue doing their own thing and not have to acknowledge God. They chose Barrabas because they wanted God to go away.
And that is exactly what we also did when we elected Barack Obama.
One of the clearest indicators of a man's heart is how he treats the weak and the powerless. We knew that Obama embraces abortion, would let babies die rather than give them medical treatment if they were born alive after an abortion attempt, does not admit even that they are persons, with a life to live and a future. In his own words, he considers it "above his pay grade" to acknowledge that they are even alive. We knew that and yet we chose him to lead us.
We knew that he didn't have the best interests of families in mind. He said himself that his policies would "necessarily cause costs to skyrocket" and put people out of business. And so we have families losing their homes and savings. Jobs can't be found. Entire industries are stressed and failing. We are in debt to our eyeballs to other countries with no hope of ever extricating ourselves, at least without enormous cost over much time. And Obama is not only okay with that, but wants more of it.
We knew that his friends and associates were people of bad character, who actively opposed our nation's values, who stood against God and against the things we hold to be right and true. But we told ourselves it would be all right because he spoke beautifully and looked so presidential, and the crease in his pants was just right.
Character does matter. Truth does matter. We lie to ourselves when we think we can elect persons to office who belive they have no higher authority to answer to and expect them to act morally and with integrity or wisdom. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The only answer to this corruption is to put in place people who know and believe that no matter how high a position they hold, they are NOT the absolute power.
It also matters who they consider their God to be. If the god they follow isn't the One (the only one) who is motivated by truth, love, justice, kindness, grace, wisdom, righteousness, goodness, and mercy--all of those things--then we will get none of those things.
The fact is that although we have people of many beliefs, we ARE a christian nation, a nation that set itself up to walk in God's ways. And that is the only reason the US has been exceptional.
We must wake up. We must choose leaders who acknowlege and revere God. We must follow Him ourselves. Pray for this.
"O God, you have cast us off, you have scattered us, you have been displeased; O turn yourself to us again. You have shaken the land and torn it open; mend its fractures, for it is quaking. You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger. But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow. Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered." (Psalm 60:1-5)
