Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee discusses how current candidates should discuss politics and economics | Marvin Olasky

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee participated in GOP presidential candidate debates four years ago. Now he can sit and watch others. Here are some edited excerpts of my interview of him.

Should Republican candidates be anti-government? Republicans are not anti-government. Republicans believe in government, believe that it should be limited, and, to the extent that it can be, local. They do not believe that it should be centralized. It should be decentralized and moved out to the closest place of the people being governed.

When should the federal government be involved in a domestic policy problem? Only when there is no practical way for it to be solved at the individual, the family, the community, or the church level. Only when it escapes all the strata below should it ever end up at the federal level. Seeing where individual responsibility stops and when the government picks up is more of an art than a science. People want to make very simplistic sort of slogan approaches to policy, and when you really get into issues it's a little more complicated than that.

Ok, as an example of a complication, how do you reason through the question of whether the federal government should tell people what they should eat? Government should not tell you what to eat and what not to eat, or whether to put salt on your food or whether you can put sugar on top of your cereal. But the government is already involved in what you eat by the way it subsidizes certain products and doesn't subsidize others. If the government is subsidizing high fructose corn syrup and making it a very cheap commodity, the manufacturers are going to put more of that in your food than they are fresh fruits and vegetables.

Are school lunches already an example of federal reach? If you go to a school cafeteria, the government is already involved in saying what you should eat by saying what's going to be on the menu. The ingredients are FDA-certified, subsidized commodities sent at either low or no cost to that school. So the government has in essence decided a lot of those things that those kids were going to eat. What if the government decided that a lot of what they sent was going to be healthy? If a kid is going to eat a meal at school, and we've already decided that he is, shouldn't that meal be a little healthier than something that is filled with sodium and sugar?

Turning from food to money: Grover Norquist has for years pushed candidates to sign his no new taxes pledge. Would you want all GOP presidential candidates to sign a no new bailouts pledge? I would love that. And I would love for all the potential candidates to have to pledge whether they supported the previous bailouts, and they would have to go on record, because a lot of them who would say it is a bad idea now would have to explain why they thought it was such a great idea back in 2008. And let's be very clear: Republicans who sponsored and put forward that 2008 bailout teed it up so that Obama and the Democrats could do one in 2009. We had the stimulus bill and all the bailouts because it was hard for the Republicans to say, oh no, we don't believe in bailouts on principle. They'd already violated their principles.

What should GOP presidential candidates say about any future bailout proposals? We are not going to take money from people who are responsible, people who've worked very hard, who've saved, and been thoughtful and good stewards of their money and their businesses. We're not going to take their money and give it to people who've recklessly mismanaged their businesses, who've changed the dynamics of investing from investing in the real value of goods and services to speculation.

What should candidates suggest as a way to encourage stewardship rather than speculation on Wall Street? Make sure that the government does not aid and abet irresponsible behavior. Tell speculators, "You're not going to get any taxpayer money, and you're not going to get tax breaks for what you lose."

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Fair Tax – let me briefly explain how it works.

You get rid of income tax.

You get rid of all the withholding.

You get rid of corporate taxes completely, totally. After all – those taxes are not really paid by the corporations. They're passed on to the customer with a 22 percent embedded tax in the system.

You eliminate that, which means the prices of what you purchase will go down.

You replace it with a 23 percent consumption tax. Now, that sounds expensive, but you only pay when you purchase something new, whether it's a product or a service.

Also, It's a completely transparent tax system.

It doesn't increase taxes. It's revenue neutral. It will bring business back to the United States that is leaving our shores – our current, complicated, unfair tax laws make it impossible for an American-based business to compete with lower tax structures in other countries.

Don’t tell me something this “sweeping” can’t be passed. With your help . . . it can – and it will.

Happy 4th of July - Weekend!

Janet and I hope you and your family have a glorious weekend as many begin to celebrate the 4th of July. What a great time to stop and give special thanks for freedom and the greatest country in the world. No matter what our differences may be as a people, we know that because of our founding fathers, we have the right to voice those differences.

God has truly blessed us with unique freedoms and a bounty of good people and good things.

Although the legal separation of our country from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence, it was not until July 4 of that year that it was finally approved. Beginning in 1777, America commenced the annual celebrations known as the "4th of July."

Whether your family or community celebrates the 4th with a picnic, a parade, fireworks, or a combination of all three, let's not lose sight of what our founding fathers fought for: "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Enjoy your holiday and remember to say a prayer for our military – who continue the idea of America by fighting to keep us free.

Yesterday, President Obama gave a stern lecture to Congress for not cutting a deal yet to end the debt ceiling standoff. And he made some good points about the need for action. Unfortunately, some were offset by the fact that the people he was lecturing aren’t the people who caused the problem. They’ve only been in office since January and haven’t even had time to write a budget yet. It was the last few Congresses that ran up trillion dollar-plus deficits and failed even to propose a budget for over two years. Obama also used what cynics call the “don’t kill that puppy” ploy. It’s where you set up a false choice to make the other side look unreasonable, as in “either you want to do it my way, or you want to kill a puppy.” For instance, he asked if Republicans would jeopardize children’s safety and college educations to protect tax breaks for private jet owners. But there’s really no connection between the two. You’re not throwing children to the hyenas just because you preserve a tax break that helps create jobs for aviation workers who have children to support themselves. Besides, you’d think he’d approve of that tax break, since it was part of his own stimulus bill.

The President is right about Congress needing to take action to get the nation’s finances in order. But that will only happen when both sides come to the table with serious intent and mutual respect, not by using the crisis as a pretext for impugning the other guys’ motives and playing class warfare for political gain. Obama also told Congress that it was irresponsible to go on vacation while the nation’s in fiscal crisis, so they’ll stay in Washington through the Fourth of July. A noble thought, although it might do us all more good if they went home, soaked up a little outside-the-Beltway patriotism, and got an earful from their constituents. And it could be argued that if Congress had spent less time in Washington, we wouldn’t HAVE a debt crisis. Meanwhile, Obama must be confident that the crisis will soon be over. His own vacation house in Martha’s Vineyard is already booked for mid-August.

Eugene, Oregon

Just how liberal is Eugene, Oregon? Would you believe the most controversial issue the City Council took up this month was a vote to say the Pledge of Allegiance before their meetings? Sponsor Mike Clark thought it would be a no-brainer. He didn’t count on fellow council members declaring themselves citizens of the world and denouncing the Pledge as divisive and tantamount to reading the Communist Manifesto – which I suspect they wouldn’t have gotten half as worked up about. In the end, they compromised and will say the Pledge only at four meetings a year, close to patriotic holidays. I guess council members who oppose it can just pledge allegiance to the UN flag. Although that wasn’t the flag that was flying at all the battles that won them the right to hold free and open meetings.
